India state to build 100 villages

The government of the western Indian state of Maharashtra is to create 100 new villages to rehabilitate victims of this year's floods
Some 5,000 families are homeless after their villages were completely wiped out in floods in July, the worst in the state's history.

A senior official told the BBC it would take a couple of years and millions of dollars to complete the project.

Dr Hwang has been hailed as a hero in South Korea

Research by South Korea's
top human cloning scientist - hailed as a breakthrough earlier this year - was fabricated, colleagues have concluded.

A Seoul National University panel said the research by world-renowned Hwang Woo-suk was "intentionally fabricated", and he would be disciplined.
Dr Hwang said he would resign, but he did not admit his research was faked.
"I sincerely apologise to the people for creating shock and disappointment," he said after the panel's announcement. "As a symbol of apology, I step down as professor of Seoul National University."

US mosques checked for radiation

US authorities have been secretly monitoring radiation levels at Muslim sites amid fears that terrorists might obtain nuclear weapons, it has emerged.
Scores of mosques and private addresses have been checked for radiation, the US News and World Report says.

A Justice Department spokesman said the programme was necessary in the fight against al-Qaeda.

Last week, President George W Bush admitted allowing the wiretapping of Americans with suspected terror links.

Mr Bush has defended the covert programme and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.

Bethlehem 'has become a prison'

Israel's most senior Roman Catholic leader said Bethlehem has become an "immense prison" since the erection of the West Bank barrier.

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah, called for all barriers between people to be dismantled.

The patriarch was speaking in Bethlehem, where he will celebrate the traditional Christmas Eve mass.

Israel says the barrier is needed to keep out Palestinian bombers, but Palestinians regard it as a land grab.

Mourners mark tsunami anniversary

Ceremonies have been taking place to mark the first anniversary of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami.
More than 200,000 people were killed when an earthquake beneath the ocean sent giant waves crashing ashore.

Places as far apart as Sri Lanka, Thailand and Somalia were affected by the disaster.

Worst affected was the Indonesian province of Aceh, closest to the quake epicentre, where more than two-thirds of the deaths occurred.

China plans mass bird flu vaccine
China says it plans to produce one billion doses of a new bird flu vaccine for animals.

The country's scientists have been working on the new vaccine for four years, according to state media.

It costs a fifth of current treatments, and there are hopes it could also help provide the basis for human protection against the deadly H5N1 strain of flu.
