Earthquake in Iran kills 3, dozen injured

TEHRAN: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake in southern Iran killed three people and left dozens injured Sunday, a provincial official said.

Heidar Alishvandi, the governor of Qeshm, was quoted by state-run television as saying that rescue teams were deployed to the affected areas, which included four destroyed villages.

Tehran's seismologic center said the quake hit in the early afternoon in the Persian Gulf off the major port city of Bandar Abbas, home to half a million people, and Qeshm Island, 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) south of Tehran, the capital.

Masoud Dalman, head of the provincial emergency affairs, said several buildings in Qeshm were damaged. Tehran measured the quake at 5.9; the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 6.1 magnitude.

Several dead in south Iran quake

A powerful earthquake has hit southern Iran, damaging several villages and killing at least five people and injuring dozens more, officials say.

The 5.9-magnitude quake struck Qeshm island, home to 120,000 people, and the city of Bandar Abbas, state media said.
The Qeshm island governor said four nearby villages had been damaged and at least five people had been killed.
The quake, which struck at 1353 (1023 GMT), was felt in the neighbouring Gulf states of Oman and the UAE.
Iran sits in a volatile earthquake region, and is regularly struck by damaging quakes.
A 6.4-magnitude quake hit the town of Zarand in Kerman province in February, killing hundreds of people and injuring more than 1,400. The ancient city of Bam was destroyed in December 2003 by a 6.7-strength earthquake that killed more than 26,000 people.

Only 7.5pc clear CSS exam
ISLAMABAD, Nov 28: Of the 3,678 candidates who appeared in the competitive examination held in August for recruitment to posts in BPS-17, only 276 could clear the written part of the examination, according to the result announced on Monday.

A notification issued by the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) said the pass percentage came to just 7.5, :| the lowest in recent years reflecting the falling quality of education being imparted to students in the country’s institutions.

Musharraf urges youths to stop hate-mongers: Varsities chapter of NVM launched

LAHORE, Nov 28: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Monday made an impassioned plea to youths to “stop the people involved in spreading (religious) hatred and militancy and disturbing peace” in the country and abroad. “Whoever is spreading hatred, extremism and militancy needs to be stopped. We must forge unity and harmonize our society,” he told university students who had gathered at Aiwan-i-Iqbal to take oath as volunteers.

The ceremony, attended by students from different universities of Punjab, was held to mark what Governor Khalid Maqbool said was the launch of the universities chapter of the National Volunteer Movement (NVM).

President Musharraf cautioned that Pakistan would not move forward if it did not command respect (of other nations). “If you don’t command authority or do not enjoy a good reputation, you have to listen to what others tell you and accept their viewpoint…If we want to move forward, we’ll have to acquire knowledge and achieve economic development and prosperity,” he said.

He said extremists were involved in sectarian violence in the country and terrorism outside it. “The terrorists neither have any understanding of their end goal nor do they have the ability to achieve anything. They are just tarnishing the name of Pakistan (in the comity of nations),” he said.

India denies Pakistan’s hand in killing

NEW DELHI, Nov 28: Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee denied on Monday a colleague’s claim that Pakistan was somehow responsible for the killing of an Indian driver by the Taliban in Afghanistan and said New Delhi had in fact asked Islamabad for help in the incident.

Press Trust of India, which had earlier quoted National Security Advisor M.K. Naryanan as suggesting that Pakistan had a hand in the incident, quoted Mr Mukherjee as telling parliament that the report was not true.

“India had sought Pakistan’s help in rescuing (Border Roads Organisation) employee Maniappan Raman Kutty, who was abducted and killed by the Taliban, but was told by Islamabad that it has ceased to have any contacts with the Afghan militia,” Mr Mukherjee was quoted as telling the Lok Sabha.

He said Pakistani authorities expressed their inability to assist on the ground that they no longer had any contacts with the Taliban.

“He denied that (the Indian) government has pointed any accusing finger at Pakistan for Kutty’s killing in western Afghanistan after four days in captivity,” PTI said.

The clarification came from Mr Mukherjee when Leader of the Opposition Lal Krishan Advani drew his attention to reports quoting Mr Narayanan that Pakistan was involved in the dastardly act. Mr Advani said it was a serious matter and wanted the government to take parliament into confidence.

Two die of cold; helicopters resume aid flights
MUZAFFARABAD/ISLAMABAD, Nov 28: Army and international aid agencies resumed helicopter flights in the earthquake-hit areas on Monday as weather turned clement in the morning after intermittent rains overnight However, cold took its first toll when a three-month-old Waqar Mukhtar died of pneumonia hours after he was brought in from nearby Neelum valley in a government hospital here whereas a middle-aged man died a day after he was brought in with hypothermia in the NATO field hospital in Bagh.

The air operations were suspended on Sunday when high-altitude areas of the quake-stricken region received winter’s first snowfall and plains took lashing of moderate rain, compounding the miseries of homeless survivors.

However, transportation of relief goods continued through slippery roads despite threats of landslides in the mountainous terrain.

The air operations were resumed at 10am on Monday after the weather became clear.

Musharraf pledges more funds for education :tauba


ISLAMABAD, Nov 30: President General Pervez Musharraf has said education is no more a neglected sector in the country and the government is striving to bring about improvements through various measures.

Speaking at an international conference on the Future of Schools and Education here on Wednesday, he said the government would increase budgetary allocation for this vital sector from 2.7-4 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said the annual budgetary allocations for higher education had recorded an increase from Rs600 million to over Rs40 billion. The government, he said, would keep increasing funds for education every year.


The government, he said, aimed at improving the adult literacy rate, adding that the National Commission of Human Development was playing an important role in this regard and had already reached out to 40 districts in the country. It would cover the entire country through its volunteers in the next few years.:dua

President Musharraf said the government was aware of the need to improve the primary and secondary education system. He urged the Beacon House System of Education, which organized this national conference, to sponsor schools in the quake-hit areas and to adopt public sector schools in order to improve them.
