Foreign relief workers won’t jeopardize sovereignty: Aziz
    (Updated at 1330 PST)
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said that the presence of foreign relief troops in Pakistan would not jeopardise Pakistan’s sovereignty.

“Foreign doctors in uniform don’t threaten our sovereignty,” he told a delegation of nazims from Mansehra district.

He said it would not make any difference if foreign doctors were in uniform or not. “Basically, they are here to help us,” he said, adding that there should be no misconception among the people about foreign relief workers.

The prime minister also announced Rs 100 million for the Mansehra government to meet its immediate expenses and fulfill the urgent needs of the people and asked the nazims to spend the amount transparently.

A severe aftershock measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale and two mild aftershocks rattled earthquake-battered northern Pakistan early on Sunday, the seismological department said. The strongest aftershock since October 8 struck the capital Islamabad, North West Frontier Province and Azad Kashmir at 7:12 am (0212 GMT), a department official told AFP. It had its epicentre 120 kilometres north of Islamabad and rattled the cities of Peshawar, Malakand, Swat, Mansehra, Balakot, Muzaffarabad and Rawlakot, he said. Earlier, two mild aftershocks measuring 4.5 and 4.7 on the Richter scale were felt in Balakot, Mansehra and Muzaffarabad at 1:42am and 4:04 am, he said. There were no immediate reports of damage but the aftershocks panicked residents who abandoned their homes and tents to rush to safety, witnesses said.

                          (Updated at 2200 PST)
LONDON: Prime Minister Tony Blair has lost the key House of Commons vote on plans to allow police to hold terror suspects without charge for up to 90 days.

MPs rejected the proposals by 322 votes to 291. They are now voting on whether to accept a compromise detention limit.

The defeat came despite Mr Blair saying MPs had a "duty" to give police the powers they needed to tackle terrorism.

Bird flu conference calls for coordinated action, funds
                              (Updated at 2215 PST)
GENEVA: A conference on bird flu on Wednesday agreed a blueprint for combatting the deadly H5N1 virus among birds and strengthening preparations to cope with any pandemic of a mutated pathogen among humans.

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director general Lee Jong-wook, summing up the three-day conference, said that up to a billion dollars would be needed over the next three years to help poor countries.

Thirty-five million dollars will be needed urgently to fund action over the next six months, he said.

"The world recognises that this is a major public health challenge," said Lee. "Once a pandemic virus appears, it will be too late."
