Transport police 'on high alert'

Police think the Shepherd's Bush suspect took off a blue England shirt before boarding a bus
A major police operation is under way on the UK's transport system, with officers on a precautionary high alert.
The effort to reassure the public and deter would-be attackers saw the rail system's "largest ever deployment of police", British Transport Police said.

Officers investigating the failed 21 July attacks have arrested nine men in Tooting, south London. Three women were held in Stockwell, a few miles away.

Medium flood in Indus at Guddu and Sukkur barrages

SUKKUR: Indus at the Sukkur and Guddu barrages was flowing in medium flood, as more lands in Katcha area was submerged by the floodwater.

Water level in the river was dropping at Taunsa, while 240 villages were inundated in Tehsil Rojhan of Rajanpur by the floodwater.

According to the irrigation department control room at Sukkur the maximum upstream discharge at Guddu was recorded on Thursday at 4,65,645 cusecs and the down stream 4,33,100 cusecs.

US copter destroyed in Afghanistan landing

KABUL: A US military helicopter was destroyed when a fire broke out during a hard landing in southeast Afghanistan, but there were no casualties, the US military said on Thursday.

The twin-rotor CH-47 Chinook made the hard landing as the crew attempted to land forces in southwest of the town of Spin Boldak, a military statement said.

"A fire, which is believed to have started from the hard landing, destroyed the aircraft. No one was injured," the statement said.

About 600 held in a week

ISLAMABAD, July 27: Security forces have rounded up about 600 suspected militants in a week-long crackdown that followed the July 7 London attacks, officials told AFP on Wednesday. Raids were continuing and police and security agencies were on the lookout for more suspects across all four provinces and in Azad Kashmir, they said.

Of those arrested, 295 belonged to militant outfits banned by President Pervez Musharraf in the past three years.

Pakistan successfully test fires cruise missile

Mr. Shaukat said that Pakistan is the first ever country of the region who carried out cruise missile test and now Pakistan has joined the club of countries producing cruise missile. President Pervaiz Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz have congratulated the scientists on successful test.
