Brazil into last 16 at World Cup



Munich: Champions Brazil qualified for the last 16 knockout stages of the World Cup on Sunday by defeating Australia 2-0 in Munich.

That made it two wins out of two for Carlos Alberto Parreira's men after an opening 1-0 win over Croatia and with six points they were assured of one of the two qualifying slots from Group F.

Qualifiers for the last 16 prior to Sunday were Germany, Ecuador, England, Argentina, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Azlan Shah Cup: Malaysia draw 2-2 with South Korea



KUALA LUMPUR: With just two minutes left to full-time and Malaysia was about to taste victory, South Korea forced a 2-2 draw in the group A match of the 15th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament held at the National Hockey Stadium, Bukit Jalil here Sunday.

The Malaysian players protested the Koreans' second goal, but umpire Eduardo Garcia Lizana of Spain refused to change his decision and allowed the goal.

"We should have won the game. The players said that the umpire told them to wait but by then the Koreans had pushed the ball out and they were caught off guard.

"They were not ready for the penalty corner. Overall, it was a tough match and despite that we managed to score. Which is good for the team," said national coach Wallace Tan.

Midfielder Mohamad Sukri Mutalib put Malaysia ahead in the 13th minute when he played a one-two with Sharun Nabil Abdullah before flicking the ball into the net, beating South Korean goalkeeper Dong Sik Ko.

The Koreans came back looking for an equaliser but Malaysian goalkeeper, S. Kumar was in top form to keep the scoreline to the minimal.

The second half, however, saw the Koreans in control of the match and found the equaliser in the 59th minute through Hyo Sik You.

Malaysia rallied back and took the lead for the second time when Chua Boon Huat deflected in an outside "D" hit by Jiwa Mohan in the 62nd minute.

Jong Hyun Jang saved South Korea from the brink of defeat when he flicked in the equaliser in the 68th minute.

Netherlands beat India in Azlan Shah Cup semis



KUALA LUMPUR: Netherlands beat India 1-0 in the first semifinal of the 15th Azlan Shah cup here on Friday.

Netherlands was able to break through India's defence in the 64th minute with Roderick Weusthos scoring from a penalty corner.

The Indian team failed to equalize the goal and lost the match with 1-0 margin.

Murali out of England tour

Murali out of England tour



LONDON: Muttiah Muralitharan has left Sri Lanka's tour of England early because of a family illness.

Murali is flying to Chennai in India because his child is unwell and is not expected to return for the remainder of the tour.

The off-spinner was once again the mainstay of Sri Lanka's attack during the Test series against England, taking 24 wickets at an average of 16.87 as the three-match encounter was drawn 1-1.

"He has already left (the team hotel) and is flying out Friday," a team spokesman told the media.

Sri Lanka lead the five-match series 2-0, after a pair of convincing wins, with the third match at Durham's Riverside Ground on Saturday.
