    Sharapova cruise into 3rd round

London: Maria Sharapova, the 2004 women's champion, overpowered Ashley Harkleroad 6-2, 6-2 in 67 minutes. The match was slightly tougher than her 51-minute 6-2, 6-0 win the previous day over Anna Smashnova.

"I didn't think I had enough of a challenge to see where my game was at in the first round," the third-seeded Russian said. 'The points were very quick. But today I played a few rallies and I definitely did a lot of good things."

Sharapova had too much power and consistency for the 76th-ranked American, who had reached the second round for only the first time in four attempts.

Sharapova, her shriek-like grunts carrying beyond the Court 2 stands, took control by winning 14 of 15 points at one stretch in the first set. She finished with 27 winners and 12 unforced errors. Harkleroad, mostly on the defensive, had four winners and seven errors.

Sharapova saved a break point _ the only one she faced _ and needed five match points before she closed out the contest when Harkleroad sent a backhand wide.

Defending champion and three-time winner Venus Williams was up later against Lisa Raymond, with top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo facing Samantha Stosur.

On the men's side, 2002 winner Lleyton Hewitt and two-time runner-up Andy Roddick were also scheduled to play second-round matches.

          Portugal beat England on penalties

GELSENKIRCHEN: Portugal beat England 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0 following extra-time in their World Cup quarter-final here on Saturday.

England played a man short for nearly an hour, gamely holding on and creating chances along the way. When time ran out, the boisterous English fans seemed happy to have survived, jumping and singing along with "Que Sera, Sera" as the shootout loomed.

But shootouts are not where England shines, and it now has lost five of its last six in major tournaments.

Portugal, which also beat England on penalty kicks in the European Championship quarterfinals two years ago, meets Brazil or France on Wednesday in its first World Cup semifinal since 1966.

A Scolari-coached team knocked out England for the second straight World Cup. Four years ago, he led Brazil to a 2-1 quarterfinal win over the English en route to the title.

England has lost on penalty kicks in major tournaments in five of its last six shootouts: to Portugal in the 2004 European Championship quarterfinals, to Argentina in the second round of the 1998 World Cup, to Germany in the 1996 Euro semifinals and to Germany in the 1990 World Cup semis.

Its lone win in that span was against Spain in the 1996 Euro quarterfinals.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays in England for Manchester United, converted the final penalty, sending the ball to his right as goalkeeper David Robinson went the other way.

Portugal's small contingent of fans, relegated to one corner of the stadium and drowned out for the entire game, were suddenly loud enough to fill the closed-roof stadium in Gelsenkirchen.

Siamao Sabrosa and Helder Postiga also converted penalties for Portugal, whole Higo Viana hit a post and Petit sent the ball wide.

Ricardo, Portugal's goalkeeper, stopped kicks by Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, whose shot rebounded off Ricardo, then hit the crossbar before bouncing out. Only Owen Hargreaves converted his penalty for England.

France slap defeat on Brazil 1-0 in quarter-final

FRANKFURT: A Thierry Henry goal handed France a deserved 1-0 win over lacklustre defending champions Brazil in a World Cup quarter-final here on Saturday.

France, whose dominant midfield display was fired by the imperious Zinedine Zidane, will meet Portugal in Wednesday's semi-final in Munich.

Henry scored in the 57th minute, drifting in late and unopposed at the far post to meet a Zidane free-kick with a right footed side-foot volley past a diving Dida.

The goal was just rewards for a French team often dubbed as too old and uninspiring which had controlled midfield thanks to the sterling efforts of man-of-the-match "Zizou", who just as in the 3-0 victory in the 1998 World Cup final proved Brazil's nemesis.

The veteran captain showed some at-times sensational footwork in his golden boots and was the catalyst for a buoyant French team, even if his final balls tended to be overhit.

After a tight first-half with few chances and where Dida and counterpart Fabien Barthez were not tested, the game came alight in the second half.

Henry's goal spurred France into waves of counter-attacks against a Brazil side lacking any real creative purpose up front despite early glimpses of playmaker Ronaldinho's silky skills.

With their back four in disarray, Brazilian defender Juan almost deflected a cross into his own goal four minutes after Henry's goal - his second in this World Cup.

France's tough midfield holding duo of Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele were quick to retreat and fill in as Brazil sought an equaliser, the most potent threat posed by Bayern Munich midfielder Ze Roberto down the left wing.

But it was France who should have scored a second, Franck Ribery sprinting past the covering defence in the 70th minute, but only snatching a shot from a Henry pass which was well parried by Dida.

With French tails well and truly up, Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira threw on Adriano to help out Ronaldo up front and the South Americans kept pushing.

Pekerman quits after Germany defeat Argentina

BERLIN: Argentina is out of the World Cup, and coach Jose Pekerman is leaving as coach.

Pekerman announced he was stepping down just minutes after Germany defeated Argentina 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Penalties settled things after the two former champions were level at 1-1 after 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time.

``For sure I am not going to continue,'' said the 56-year-old Pekerman, who took over the team in September of 2004 from Marcelo Bielsa.

``This is over,'' he added when asked a second time about his decision. ``A cycle comes to an end and I will certainly not go on. I am convinced that I did whatever was within my reach. It's time to look for something else.''

India all out at 200 runs in Jamaica test

JAMAICA: Paceman Jerome Taylor's career-best haul helped the West Indies dismiss India for just 200 on the first day of the fourth and final test.

India, after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, struggled all day though captain Rahul Dravid did his best to save the innings with a watchful 81.

Taylor took five for 50, his first five-wicket haul in a test innings on a pitch, which assisted the bowlers, Dravid played with admirable patience and sound technique in
conditions that were all about survival. His 81 took 215 balls and he stroked 10 fours.

Dravid was eventually caught behind by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin after edging a ball from seamer Corey Collymore that just nipped away.

Dravid and veteran Anil Kumble put on 93 for the seventh wicket in a partnership that ensured India approached some respectability.

Kumble was bowled for 45 when he was rushed into a prod outside off stump by Dwayne Bravo and bottom-edged the ball into his wicket.

India had slumped to three for two early in the day and at lunch had reached just 29-2 in 29 overs.

By tea they had battled to 102 for six with Taylor's pace and hostility troubling all the batsmen.

Dravid was at the crease for five-and-a-half hours, but had practically nothing by way of support.

Both teams were unchanged from the drawn third test in St Kitts earlier this week. The series stands at 0-0 heading into the decisive final game.

Former English fast bowler passes away

LONDON: Former fast English bowler Fred Trueman passed away on Saturday at the age of 75 years.

His wife, Veronica, issued a brief statement saying: "We lost Fred at 12.15 this afternoon". The former Yorkshire cricketer was diagnosed with lung cancer in May.

He was recognised as England's greatest fast bowler.

The first man in cricket history to 300 Test wickets, the Yorkshireman was statistically and anecdotally superior not only to his 1950s and 1960s contemporaries but also to all who preceded and followed him.
