Spyware - A Silent Threat!
Spyware is a type of software that is installed on your computer by
some web sites - usually without your knowledge. These invisible spyware
programs can:
* track your keystrokes
* redirect your ongoing web traffic through their servers
* hijack your browser to point to unsavory sites
* allow others to remotely control your computer
These types of threats pose a very real and often invisible danger to
your privacy, to your data, and to your computer's operation. Once your
computer is infected, it can also infect other campus computers. In
addition, Spyware generates so much network traffic that it could consume
most of our available bandwidth, if we did not block its effects.
Computer threats ("malware") can infiltrate your computer from emails you
open, websites you visit, software you load, and now even pictures you
view. It is important to exercise caution and common sense when surfing
the web and opening emails. Use your judgment as to whether a site
might be untrustworthy or not well-secured.
