Save Document Properties on First Save

SUMMARY: Force Word 2003 to ask you for extended document properties.

When you open a document and choose "File" - "Properties", Microsoft Word 2003 displays information about the file such as the document's title, subject, author, company, category, and keywords, but only if you remember to fill in this information. Though it may take extra time to fill in such details, they may be helpful if you ever need to search for a document you or a colleague wrote days, weeks, perhaps months ago.

As it is easy to forget entering in these details, Word 2003 has an option that automatically opens this dialog box upon the first save of every document. To enable this feature:

1. Choose "Tools" then "Options".
2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Save" tab.
3. Check "Prompt for document properties".
4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

Give Your Documents a Background Picture

To spice up your Word 2003 documents, you can give them background pictures or photographs that will repeat themselves on every page. For maximum text readability, consider choosing photos or pictures with large areas of whitespace or change your text color to help make it stand out from the picture's colors.

1. Choose "Format", "Background", then "Fill Effects".
2. When the "Fill Effects" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "Picture" tab.
3. Click the "Select Picture" button.
4. Browse your computer for your picture file to use and click "Insert".
5. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
