Wavy Underlines, Double Underlines, and More

SUMMARY: Underline selected text with waves, dots, double-underlines, colored underlines, and more.

With Word 2003, when you highlight text and press the "U" button for underline, the text is underlined with one solid line. Did you know you could, instead, insert a wavy underline, a double underline, a dotted underline, and more? To do so:

    1. Highlight text you want to underline.

    2. Right-click and choose "Font".

    3. When the "Font" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "Font" tab.

    4. Click on the "Underline style" pull-down and choose your desired style of underlining. Look at the "Preview" box to see how your underline will look on selected text.

5, Click on the "Underline color" pull-down to make the color of the underline different from the color of the selected text. Look at the "Preview" box to see how your underline will look on selected text.

    6. When done, click "OK" to close the dialog box.

    Remove the Scroll Bars

SUMMARY: Hide Word 2003's scroll bars to increase document-editing space.

To gain more screen real estate for editing your Word 2003 document, you can hide the vertical scroll bar, the horizontal scroll bar, or both. Hiding the horizontal scroll bar is especially useful if you have enough horizontal resolution to display most documents onscreen without scrolling to the left or right.

    1. Click "Tools", choosing "Options".
    2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "View" tab.
    3. Under "Show", uncheck "Horizontal scroll bar" and/or "Vertical scroll bar" as desired.
    4. Press "OK" to close the dialog box.

Remove Personal Information from a File

SUMMARY: Remove your name and that of those who made changes from your Word 2003 documents.

Normally, when you save a file in Microsoft Word 2003, along with the saved file are properties containing the author's name (you) as well as the names of those who may have suggested or made tracked changes in the document. If you wish to distribute a document that does not contain this information:

      1. Open the document you want to protect.

      2. Choose "Tools" then "Options".

      3. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Security" tab.

      4. Check "Remove personal information from file properties on save".

      5. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

        Finer Text Selection

SUMMARY: Select text more precisely in your Word 2003 documents.

Normally, in Microsoft Word 2003, when you select a word and keep selecting other surrounding words, Word 2003 will automatically select the entire surrounding words. It expects that if you select one word, you want to select surrounding whole words, but what if you only want to select a few characters from a surrounding word? This can be rather difficult unless you change the text selection settings:

        1. Choose "Tools" then "Options".
        2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Edit" tab.
        3. Uncheck "When selecting, automatically select entire word".
        4. Press "OK" to close the dialog box.

          Go Metric

SUMMARY: Force Word 2003's ruler to use metric measurements.

Microsoft Word 2003, by default, uses your operating system's default unit of measurement. If, however, you would rather the ruler use centimeters instead of inches, or vice-versa, do the following:

          1. Choose "Tools" then "Options".

          2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "General" tab.

          3. Next to the "Measurement units" pull-down, choose your desired unit of measurement, such as Inches, Centimeters, Millimeters, Points, or Picas.

          4. Press "OK" to close the dialog box.
