Some friends of mine say that media is affecting a lot of children these days in terms of how they behave and it is becoming hard to discipline them. I agree that there is definitely a lot out there that children and parents have to deal in terms of the internet and television programming, however that does not mean that discipline has to take a backseat. I personally think that media has nothing to do with how one raises his/her children even in today's society in comparison to 20 -25 years ago. Yes of course at that time cell phones were not largely in everyday use as they are today and even the youngest of the youngest children have cell phones that they want to use. Of course, I also think that children should not be in possession of cell phones at all as there is no need for it at such an early stage in his/her life. If one's son or daughter has it, then other children at school will be badgering their parents to get them one too whether they need it or not.
Then getting back to the topic of discipline once again, I still feel that in today's society parents can still work at raising their kids extremely well in which they are able to give them teachings on their religion, on education, on general behaviour, etiquette, respect of elders, good mannerisms, etc. to move forward in society. Media does have an affect on a child's mind as he/she grows up, but that could also be good or bad. It is what they are watching and what his/her parents are allowing them to watch. The type of language or the amount of violence that is contributing to that program or the or the general subject of the program being viewed. I think it is up to the parent to exercise control where need be and they MUST use their own discretion to decide whether this or that program is suitable for their children to watch or not.
I find that a lot of parents are not as actively involved with their children when it comes to this subject as much as they should be. I often hear them saying how they don't have enough time to sit with their kids and or their kids are just like that. I think that it is totally wrong to say or blame the kid when the parent(s) are not carrying out their own role as they should. I also know of a few mothers that actually sit with their children when they surf the net for information or research just to make sure that their kids are not accessing websites that contain vulgarity or obscenities.
Discipline and good etiquettes all begin from home and parents please make sure to do your part always as children are innocent and have curious and developing minds.
Thanks for your attention everyone to this contribution and I would love to hear back from other members with their honest opinions and comments on this topic of discussion.
