Drawing the Picture of a Living Thing or using such Picture
Hadith tells us that most grievous chastisement is vouchsafed for drawers of pictures on the Day of Judgment.
Hadith also tells that Angels of Mercy do not enter the house in which there are pictures of living things or dogs.
Another hadith tells us that once our Holy Prophet Sallalaho Alaihi Wasallam found a curtain in his wife Ayesha's Razi Allah Anha house which has a picture on it and was displeased with it; the cloth was torn up to make cushion.
Nowadays Drawing and displaying of pictures of living things is common. Even inanimate things bears labels or are put in boxes or coverings which carry pictures of living things. Most of there pictures have absolutely no use what ever and must be scratched or pasted over.
However pictures on postage stamps, coins and currency notes are very small and may be exempted.
It is permitted to use a picture which is very small and the details of which cannot be discovered with naked eye when placed on the ground and seen standing. Pictures used in shoes or floors spreads are al*lowed, provided one does not pray on such spreads.
It is permitted to draw the small pictures which are permitted to be used. Pictures whether drawn by hand or printed or photographed are equally prohibited.
Photographing a living thing or having it photographed is not allowed.
However, pictures for passports are allowed provided the journey is necessary and not a nearly for purposes of recreation. (Details of this problem have discussed in my booklet al Taswirli Alqkam al Taswir.
