Keeping a Dog Unnecessarily
Hadith!
He who keeps a dog for purposes other than guarding his flock of animals or fields or hunting, shall go on losing merit at the rate of one carat a day (Bukhari and Muslim).
In another place Bukhari mentions two carats.
Exactly how much is the carat mentioned here is known only to Allah. However the Hadith clearly tells us that our merit shall go on decreasing at a fixed daily rate, or it may that the merit of every good deed shall be decreased by this amount. In either case it is a grievous loss, which we must avoid.
