        Varieties of Buttonhole stitch

        ~Buttonhole Wheel
        ~

Buttonhole wheel is also known as wheel stitch. This stitch is same like button hole stitch worked in a circular shape.

To work a buttonhole wheel you simply make buttonhole stitches in a circle, passing each vertical stitch through the same space in the centre.

Button hole wheel can also be worked in halves and quarters in various arrangements.

          ~Buttonhole Shading~

You can also use the buttonhole stitch as a filling stitch. By changing the shade of your thread as you progress, you can achieve a nice "needle-painted" effect.

Buttonhole Stitch used as decorative edges

            ~Feather Stitch~

Feather stitch is also known as single coral stitch. It creates stems. Fills in an area with an interesting texture.

Bring the needle out at the top of the line to be worked and hold the thread down with the left thumb. Insert the needle a little to the right on the same level and make a small stitch in a downward motion so that the needle point appears on the centre line, keeping the thread under the needle point pull the thread through the fabric to make the stitch.

Next insert the needle a little to the left on the same level and make a small stitch in a downward motion so that the needle point comes out on the centre line and keeping the thread under the needle point, pull the thread through the fabric to make the stitch. Work these movements alternatively.

                  ~ Couching ~

Consists of small straight stitches that hold down an underlying thread. Place one thread along your design outline, then stitch in place with contrast or same color thread. Used for decorative stitching, stems, outlining etc.

                  ~ Fly ~

Completed in the same way as the chain, but only a single chain is made. Creates "insects", adds texture and pattern when used as fill, and can be used to create stem and leaves of small plants.

                  ~ Satin ~

Completely fills in an area. Stitches can be varying length and are very close together.

                  ~ Long and Short ~

Variation of satin stitch. Long and short straight stitches are made, very close together. Used to fill in small areas such as flower petals, leaves, hearts and other shapes.

                  ~ Seed ~

Fills in an area with an interesting texture. Sraight stitches are of equal length and placed at varying angles. We show straight stitches of varying length in our example (shown as variation of stitch).

                  ~ Interlaced Band ~

Create two lines of back stitches, one line 1/2 stitch offset to the other. With a contrasting thread, come up through the fabric under the first stitch. Wrap thread around stitch, up and over and down through the underside of the stitch. The contrast thread does not run through the fabric; it is laced through the two lines of stitches.
