Pakistan International Airlines Corporation was founded by the Pakistan government as the national flag-carrier airline in 1951 after Pakistan gained independence from India. Prior to this time Pakistan was served by Indian airline: Orient Airways which used Dakotas on important linking services between East and West Pakistan.
ORIENT AIRWAYS was formed on 23 October 1946 for charter services within the (then) India. The airline was owned by Mohammedans and so although it was technically begun in India it could be considered Pakistan's first airline - if only in spirit. With partition Orient Airways found much work moving people from one side of the line of partition to the other side. Orient introduced Convair 240 twins in May 1949 but it's operations gradually tailed off giving the need for the new state carrier, PIA.
Local services were also operated by Pak-Air between 1948 and 1949 and later, by Crescent Air Transport between 1952 and 1954 although these operations were small scale.
PIA had merged with Orient Airways on 1 October 1953 with PIA taking over Orient's assets from 11 March 1955. Orient Airways' owners and shareholders received 40 percent of the stock of the new PIA. Thus, PIA operated the fleet of Convair 240s and DC-3s on domestic and regional routes.
