What is being contributed to Pakistani society?
Here goes an Urud saying, "Kawwa chala hans ki chaal, apna bhi bhool gaya." [Copying makes one forget his own talent/ability]. There is no denying the fact that Pakistan is full of talent and gurts but what is ironical is that we seem to be going away from own culture, traditions, rites, festivals, customs etc which, as a whole, make up our nationality and identity that is different from the rest ones.
Excess of everything is bad. There is no harm in adopting the brighter values of the West and other countries, but it should not lead us to abandoning our own. True that we are living in an internet age, but why we have been left behind despite having such a great talent in the filed?
Take the example of our young pop-singing-generation who are viewed singing in Western style on private TV channels. After all, we are Pakistani, we have our own style which needs to be polished, promoted and improvised rather than introducing and developing Western and European styles not only in singing but in other areas too in the development and modernisation. Old is gold and that is why we are now missing our old days?
Sometimes I think as if we were working for the West and India in Pakistan. Let's not forget that by doing so we would be nowhere else. [Na idher kay rahay aur na udher kay]. Neither could we become American nor Indian by doing what we are not supposed to do.
There is a handful of people in the artists and writers community who are still contributing positively to the society which is being demoralised by introducing and adopting the Western-styled culture.
Just imagine today we feel proud if we get to visit America, London or Canada, but we feel something like shy to visit Saudi Arabia for Umra or Hajj and that is why thousands of Muslim in Pakistan who are able to perform Hajj but have not yet done it due to reasons best known to them. Should we say their faith has weakened or what?
Likewise, Almighty Allah clearly says, "If you can carry out what has been ordained otherwise other people are there to serve Islam." But what is the service to Islam? Is it not that we should submit ourselves entirely to Almighty Allah? Is it not that we should recognise what is 'halaal' and what is 'haraam'? Is it not that we should respect our elders and be kind to our youngsters? Is it not that we should also convey the message of the Holy Prophet Muhammad {SAW} to the non-believers? Is it not that we should live our lives in accordance with the teachings of Islam? In ancient time, it was the brilliant conduct, treatment and behaviour of the Muslim leaders, scholars, sufis etc who attracted non-Muslims to Islam.
In fact, we seem to dislike 'mullas' in that they are not serving Islam in true sense. Least of their message carries any impact on us as they themselves are not living their lives under the golden rules of Islam. Their words are completely different from their deeds.
Lastly, in the current issue of blasphemous caricatures, the people of Pakistan supported MMA just becaue of the issue. I am damn sure that the government could have delt with the crisis if something - like giving a call to the masses for boycotting Danish products and recalling the ambassador stationed in Denmark - had been done early. Here I don't blame the President but his secretaries, advisors and ministers as some of them are pro-US and pro-India.
