Edgy Federer wins Shanghai opener


Federer has lost just three matches in 2005

World number one Roger Federer began his quest for a third successive Masters Cup title with victory over David Nalbandian in Shanghai.
Federer, playing his first match for six weeks following an ankle injury, came through 6-3 2-6 6-4 in the futuristic Qi Zhong Stadium.

Vaughan: Back in action

Michael Vaughan has been passed fit to lead England in the second Test against Pakistan in Faisalabad.

The batsman missed the 22-run defeat in Multan in the opening match of the series due to a knee injury he suffered in the tourists' final warm-up match.

It was feared the cartilage problem, which has bothered him before, could force the team's skipper to fly home early from the trip.

However, Vaughan managed to come through a fitness test on the eve of the second match, although he is admits the knee is not completely healed.

"I have passed the fitness test and have had a good last few days," he said.
"I can feel it (the knee) a little bit but not enough to miss the game.

"It's always a slight risk when you come back from injury, but I am confident I can get through the game and that's really all that counts."

After battling back to fitness, Vaughan is now concentrating his thoughts on trying to get England back into the series after the disappointing loss in the series opener.

The visitors dominated the first four days of the match only to crumble in the fourth innings as they failed to reach a target of 198.

"It's tough because in the circumstances we have to win both Tests to win the series," Vaughan said.

"Winning the toss and getting off to a good start will be crucial. We want to put Pakistan on the back foot as early as we can."
Vaughan has already confirmed he will be coming in at number three, meaning the selectors are left to choose between Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood for the final spot in the batting order.

Nadal forced out again by injury

French Open champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next month's Chennai Open as he struggles to overcome a persistent foot injury.
The 19-year-old Spaniard first sustained the problem in the Madrid Masters final in October and withdrew from the Masters Cup in November.
He was expected to return in Chennai but doctors have advised against it.
Nadal must now prepare for the first Grand Slam of 2006, the Australian Open, starting on 15 January. World number nine Ivan Ljubicic will replace Nadal in the 32-man draw for the Chennai event, which starts on 2 January.

Beijing eyes Games profit in 2008
Beijing's 2008 Olympic Games could generate up to $16m (£9.2m) in profit, according to state media.
Since the Los Angeles Games, most hosts have struggled to break even as the running costs have soared.

But efficient Beijing marketing chiefs have deals with 10 domestic sponsors and 11 global companies, Xinhua said.

"We would like to see $1bn (£580m) in sponsorships, but there is much to do to reach that figure," said Beijing organiser Jiang Xiaoyu.

Los Angeles set a record profit of $220m when it hosted the 1984 Olympics.

Beijing's forecast operating budget is about $2bn, owing to heightened security concerns.

Nel gives South Africa advantage

S[B]econd Test, Melbourne (day one, stumps): Australia 239-8 v South Africa [/B]

Australia collapsed dramatically on the first day of the Melbourne Test against South Africa after Ricky Ponting's century had given them the initiative.

Ponting fell for 117 to trigger a decline from 207-3 to 239-8 at stumps.

Andre Nel was South Africa's most effective bowler (4-58), with all the wickets coming in a fine late spell.

Shaun Pollock was also in the wickets, finishing with 3-46, but on a two-paced pitch the hosts remain in contention despite a fine day for the tourists.
