Suicide blast at five star hotel in Islamabad | Marriott in ashes, 60 killed

Suicide blast at five star hotel in Islamabad | Marriott in ashes, 60 killed
Suicide bomber blows up explosive-laden vehicle | 220 injured, scores feard trapped
      Staff Reporters
ISLAMABAD: A suicide bomber blew up a truck packed with explosives at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad on Saturday, killing at least 60 people.

Police said 200 people were also wounded in the massive explosion, which ruptured a gas pipeline and triggered a huge blaze that engulfed the heavily-guarded site in flames.

Many victims leapt to their deaths from the upper floors of the hotel to escape the fire, a senior security official told, and there were fears more were buried in the debris.

The attack also came hours after new President Asif Ali Zardari --who faces a serious challenge in reining in Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants - delivered his first address to parliament, which is just a few hundred metres away.

Interior ministry official Rehman Malik told reporters the government had received word of a possible attack near the parliamentary offices. "We had intelligence reports two days ago that some incident might take place," Malik said.

The blast took place in very sensitive area of Islamabad on Sir Agha Khan Road. The area was under tight security due to the joint session of Parliament Saturday morning.

According to details, the terrorist rammed a dumper truck loaded with explosives into the gate of the hotel. The eyewitness said that before the explosion the terrorists also fired two rockets.

Muhammad Azam, a Marriott security personal, told The Post that he was standing across the road when a big brown truck appeared at the main entrance of the hotel around 7:45pm.

Azam told that the said truck was reversing and the terrorist driving it asked the security personals to lift the barriers of the gate, which they did not.

"Then I saw him getting out of the truck, taking position and firing two rockets at the hotel. During this process a fire was spotted under the truck."

Azam said Security Supervisor Zahir on duty at the main gate shouted and told them to run and save their life saying: "Save your lives, the truck is on fire and it has got explosives." He himself started running away from the burning truck, Azam said.

Muhammad Azam disclosed that as it was the time of Iftaar and about 20 security personnel were present in the cabin of the main gate which he belives were all dead.

He said he shifted the security supervisor, who was critically injured, to the ambulance and rushed him to the hospital.

The building caught fire that spread all over the building in no time.

The blast, more powerful than the one at the FIA headquarters in Lahore, dug a 15-20 feet deep crater of 30 feet diameter. Police and other rescue staffers reached the blast site within ten minutes after the blast shifting injures and dead to the policlinic, PIMS and other hospitals.

The whole building was destroyed while the windowpanes of the nearby buildings, including Evacuee Trust Plaza, FPSC building and parliament lodges were broken, injuring many people there.

On the left side of the hotel is NCA Road, across which there is the main parking of the Marriott Hotel, human body parts and glass along with the debris of the building were scattered.

About 50 ambulances along with two hundred rescue workers took part in the operation to take out the dead and injured from the buildings. More than 10 water tankers took part in the operation to extinguish the fire alongside a crane through which the rescue workers evacuated the trapped people from the hotel.

Dozens of people were still trapped in the burning building of the hotel till late Saturday night.

It was observed that though the fire-fighting staffers along with the rescue crew were working with zeal, they seemed unable to put off the fire till midnight. This was why more than two hundred army regular troops were called to continue the operation smoothly.

The security chief of the FPSC building told The Post that the two security guards of the Evacuee Trust Board building were killed while other two were injured.

The intensity of the blast could be observed from the fact that the trees and plants situated inside the green belt and alongside Sir Agha Khan Road were rooted out from the ground.

The wall of the Frontier House, opposite to the site of the blast, was also smashed completely.

All the roads leading to the Marriott Hotel were cordoned off by hundreds of security personnel. After the blast scores of residents from outskirts reached the spot to witness the destruction, creating problems in the rescue activities.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik has presented initial reports about the Marriott Hotel blast to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani.

According to these reporte, two vehicles laden with a massive load of explosives were used in the attack.

Rehman Malik visited the site and Polyclinic and inquired about the health of the injured. Talking to journalists on the occasion, he said that those involved in the incident were the enemies of Islam and Pakistan. He said that it was a suicide attack and facts would be told to the media and public soon.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister Sherry Rehman has said the blast victims would be given compensation.

All the five star hotels in Islamabad have been evacuated while a ban had been imposed on the entry of unauthorised persons in the Red Zone. The army and civil aviation authority were called to the site of the blast in order to control the fire.

Sources said the injured victims include the nationals of Denmark, Libya, Lebanon, US and Saudi Arabia. The Saudi ambassador to Pakistan had also claimed that five of Saudi nationals were injured in the blast.

The US State Department said they were in contact with its embassy crew in Pakistan and no one from the US embassy was present at the site of the blast.

          Islamabad's 'message from Hell'

          Islamabad's 'message from Hell'

          By Syed Shoaib Hasan
          BBC News, Islamabad

The bomb created a massive crater in front of the hotel

It appeared to be a message sent from Hell. The massive blast was heard 15 kilometres away.
Eyewitnesses have told the BBC that a vehicle crashed through the security barriers in front of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.
The 290-room building was the scene of total carnage as the blast ripped into its facade, destroying everything in its path.
The Marriott is just a half kilometre from Pakistan's national parliament and the residence of the prime minister.
Security sources believe these were the preferred targets, but the bomber (or bombers) was deterred by a huge security presence around those buildings.
At the time of the attack, President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and many members of parliament were having dinner at the prime minister's residence.
If the attack had hit that target, the consequences could have been unprecedented in Pakistan's history.
It is now, without doubt, a battle to the death for the soul of Pakistan

I have seen bomb wreckage in many places in Pakistan, but I have never seen anything on this scale.
Even half a kilometre away, you find yourself treading on bits of the building and pieces of trees.
          Splattered blood
Within a radius of 200 metres of the hotel, the destruction was total. The cars that had been parked across the road and the trees lining the main road were in pieces.
A film of glass, metal, broken branches and oil covered the road as I walked up to the hotel.
Here and there, blood had splattered on the footpath as it dripped from the dead and injured being carried out of the building.
Ambulances rushed in and out of the double avenue, sirens blaring, carrying the injured away to the increasingly crowded hospitals. From the main road, the lower part of the building was no longer visible. Large chunks of concrete which had been ripped out by the ferocity of the explosion blocked the view.
The target, even if it was secondary, was a symbolic one. Government ministers often rubbed shoulders with foreign diplomats there

The debris also marked the perimeter of a huge crater, which marked the point of impact.
Eyewitnesses say the huge lorry rammed through the security barrier at this point.
Something was seen being ignited on the back of the lorry - and then there was the blast.
"I was in the lobby when the blast happened," Sultan Ahmed, a hotel employee, told the BBC. "I was just walking to the lifts when I was lifted up and slammed into the wall."
He says he was knocked out, but soon came to and dragged himself out of the hotel.
But many others were not so lucky. I saw six bodies being dragged out of the debris, most with multiple wounds.
          Symbolic target
Women were crying openly as grim-faced men consoled them.
The Marriott Hotel is one of Islamabad's landmarks, a symbol of wealth and prestige. It is a favourite with foreigners, particularly westerners.
Emergency workers say that many people could be trapped on the upper floors of the building. But for a long time, fire fighters were unable to get anywhere near the inferno, which was fuelled by burst gas pipes.
Although the gas was eventually shut off, the fire continued unabated.
The rescue work was also hampered by large cracks on the inside and outside of the building. At one point workers and policemen rushed out, fearing the building was falling down.
Army engineers were called in to handle the situation.
Volunteers raced to help the injured, who left a trail of blood

There has been no claim of responsibility so far. But the key suspects are the Pakistan Taleban, operating out of the north-west of the country.
That the attack happened within hours of President Zardari's inaugural address to parliament is seen as no coincidence.
In the address, Mr Zardari said Pakistan stood ready to face its challenges in the 'war on terror'.
He reiterated that the state would only talk to those who lay down their arms and stopped targeting security forces and government installations.
But the militants apparently had other ideas, launching the most devastating attack ever to take place in the capital.
The target, even if it was secondary, was a symbolic one. Government ministers often rubbed shoulders with foreign diplomats there. It was popular with the foreign press too, not least because it is one of the few places in Islamabad where you can drink alcohol.
That it now lies in ruins is testament to the unequivocal message that the perpetrators meant to send.
There will be no laying down of arms or any surrender or change of heart.
Last May, the top commander of the Pakistan Taleban, Baitullah Mahsud, had this to say when he spoke to the BBC: "We do not expect the new government to change anything. But we will fight it, every way we can and if we are not safe in our homes, neither will they be."
'They' has now come to signify ordinary Pakistanis and that shift speaks volumes of how this war has changed in character.
It is no more a stop-start battle of wavering ideals. It is now, without doubt, a battle to the death for the soul of Pakistan.

Truck bomber kills at least 40 at Islamabad hotel

At least 40 dead, nearly 250 wounded

            * Truck bomber set off explosives after challenged

            * United States condemns attack

            By Zeeshan Haider

ISLAMABAD, Sept 20 (Reuters) - A suicide truck bomber attacked the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad on Saturday, killing at least 40 people, wounding nearly 250 and starting a fire that swept through the building in the Pakistani capital.

The explosion came hours after new President Asif Ali Zardari, widower of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, made his first address to parliament a few hundred metres away, calling for terrorism to be rooted out.

As flames engulfed the tightly guarded hotel, which is popular with foreigners, diplomats and rich Pakistanis, police said there were still people trapped inside.

"A car laden with explosives rammed the gate at the Marriott and so far we have brought out 40 dead bodies, but the number could well be higher," police chief Asghar Raza Gardazi said.

Vital to the war against al Qaeda and other Islamist militant groups, Pakistan's internal security has deteriorated at an alarming rate over the past two years.

The army is in the midst of a major offensive against al Qaeda and Taliban fighters in the Bajaur region on the Afghan border, while the U.S. military has intensified missile strikes against militants in the ethnic Pashtun tribal lands, infuriating many Pakistanis.

Militants have set off a launched a string of bombs attacks, most on security forces in the northwest, in retaliation for the attacks on them.

"They're giving a very clear, unambiguous message that if the government pursues these policies, this is what we will do in response," Talat Masood, a retired general and defence analyst, said after Saturday's attack.

"They are saying 'we can strike anywhere, at any time regardless of how good you think your security is' ... They are are also giving a message to the people of Pakistan: Your government and army are allowing the Americans to attack our territory," he said.

            20-FOOT CRATER

Saturday's attack was the worst in the capital, and came six months after a civilian government took power, and a month after it forced former army chief and firm U.S. ally Pervez Musharraf to step down as president.

A crater up to 20 feet (6 metres) deep was carved into the road in front of the hotel's security barriers. The Interior Ministry said the bomb probably contained more than 500 kg (1,100 lb) of explosives.

The Interior Ministry said two foreigners were killed and hospital officials said at least five were wounded, including a Danish diplomat, the Danish Foreign Ministry said. Up to six Saudi Arabians were missing, the Saudi ambassador said.

Flames and smoke poured out of the 290-room, city centre hotel, which has been bombed twice before. Dozens of cars were destroyed and windows were shattered in buildings hundreds of metres (yards) away.

A wounded hotel security official said a truck had been stopped at the hotel's front security barrier and two small explosions had gone off minutes before the main blast.

"There was a warning from security, they told us to go to the back of the hotel," Clemens Steinkanp, a German who was slightly wounded in the blast, said from a hospital bed.

"Nothing happened for five minutes ... but then there was a huge blast. Everything fell and there were a lot of bodies around," he said.

The Interior Ministry said 236 people had been wounded.

The British embassy said all staff had been accounted for. A U.S. embassy spokesman said preliminary reports indicated all U.S. diplomats had been accounted for.

            U.S. CONDEMNATION

Zardari is close to the United States and has vowed to maintain nuclear-armed Pakistan's commitment to the U.S.-led campaign against militancy, even though it is deeply unpopular.

The White House condemned the attack. "The United States will stand with Pakistan's democratically elected government as they confront this challenge," spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

The explosion brought down the ceiling in a banquet room where up to 300 people were at a meal to break the fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

A waiter, Mansoor Abbasi, was inside the hotel after the blast, calling out for survivors in the rubble.

"I was just setting down a glass when it happened ... Everybody started screaming. I pulled out 16 wounded people," said Abbasi, his jacket stained with blood.

The owner of the hotel, one of two five-star hotels in the capital, said the truck had been stopped at the front barrier and guards on the gate exchanged fire with the attacker.

"Some shots were fired. One of our guards fired back, and in the meantime he detonated all the explosives. All the guards on the gate died," said hotel owner Sadruddin Hashwani.

In his address to parliament, Zardari said Pakistan must stop militants from using its territory for attacks on other countries. He also said Pakistan would not tolerate infringement of its territory in the name of the fight against militancy.

Zardari, who won a presidential election this month, condemned the attack and appealed the public to remain calm. He is due to leave for the United States on Sunday, where he will hold talks with Bush. Militants destroy hotel at Pakistan capital's heart

Militants destroy hotel at Pakistan capital's heart
              By Zeeshan Haider

ISLAMABAD, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Mansoor Abbasi was serving guests when a suicide bomber struck the entrance of Islamabad's Marriott Hotel, bringing down the ceiling of the banquet hall.
There were up to 300 guests in the hall at the rear of the hotel enjoying iftar, the meal taken at dusk to break the daytime fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
"Everybody started screaming," said Abbasi, in between calling out for any survivors left lying under the rubble of the lobby, as fire spread through the floors.
"I pulled out 16 wounded people but didn't see any dead," said the young waiter, his white jacket stained with blood.
Walking past reception, Rehan Ahmed, an executive in his 30s, saw a woman employee killed by flying glass as she stood by the scanners used to check people coming in.
"It was like hell," said Ahmed, his suit jacket torn. "It was like scenes from a movie."
In the most devastating attack yet by Islamist militants in the Pakistani capital, the bomber who detonated a truckload of explosives killed at least 40 people and wounded more than 200.
Most of the fatalities occurred outside the hotel, though there were concerns for anyone trapped inside as an inferno spread. Many of the 250 wounded were in a critical condition.
"I don't know how I got out of there. It was panic all around," said journalist Imtiaz Gul, his eyebrows covered with dust after fleeing the iftar reception.
Marriott owner Sadruddin Hashwani spoke to journalists as he watched his hotel burn.
"The Marriott is the house of Islamabad," said Hashwani, whose hotel catered for the Pakistani elite, foreign diplomats, business people and journalists who pass through the capital.
"Whosoever has done this meant to damage Pakistan. He did not know that many innocent people earn bread and butter for their children," said the hotelier, adding his concern was for the loss of life not property.
              THIRD ATTACK
Hashwani prayed that the guests had been evacuated before the blaze turned into an inferno, and said thankfully occupancy was low, as it usually is during Ramadan.
Among the dead were the entire security detail manning the barricade at the entrance. Hashwani said one guard exchanged fire with the driver before the truck bomb was detonated.
Usually there are close to 10 blue uniformed armed guards and a sniffer dog on duty at the barrier.
Every vehicle has to stop at before being allowed into the hotel forecourt. The guards check under the bonnet and in the trunk, and run a mirror round the undersides of the vehicles before they are let in.
The hotel, just a couple of minutes drive from the presidency building and parliament, has been targeted twice before.
In January 2007, a suicide bomber killed himself and a guard who challenged him at a side-entrance hours before the Indian High Commission was due to host a reception there.
Before that, there had been a small blast close to the front door, but no one was killed on that occasion.
Until 2007, such incidents had been few and far between in Islamabad, a sedate, leafy city nestling against the forested Margalla Hills.
The security situation deteriorated markedly after the siege of Red Mosque in July last year.
Then president and army chief, Pervez Musharraf, ordered commandos to storm the mosque to crush an armed movement that had taken root there. More than 100 people were killed, many of them from the northwestern region bordering Afghanistan.
A Western security official said then that Musharraf had crossed the Rubicon, by taking on the militants in his own backyard.
Musharraf, who came to power in a coup nine years ago, quit as president last month rather than face impeachment by a civilian government that voted in after an election in February.
The new president, Asif Ali Zardari, lost his wife, the two-time prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, in a suicide bomb and gun attack in the neighbouring city of Rawalpindi last December. (Additional reporting by Kamran Haider; writing by Simon Cameron-Moore; editing by Elizabeth Piper)

America is the biggest terrorist of the world. the presence of allied forces, nato and America in Afghanistan spreads more violence. American attacks on the Pakistani territory, missile attacks, killing of innocent men, women and children is the root cause of the terrorist attack in Pakistan and rest of the world...

May Allah give us courage and make us brave enough to face the terrorist (American, NATO and Allied force) and defeat them, Surely only Allah is capable to help and guide. Aameen
