IT Industry worth two billion dollars, says PM

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that the information technology (IT) industry, which was virtually non-existent seven years ago, has grown to be worth two billion dollars of which one billion dollars are export related.

He also approved in principle the setting up of a venture capital fund in the private sector. The prime minister stated that the IT ministry should make efforts to attract venture capital in the IT sector and reputed International companies should be approached for this purpose. Shaukat Aziz said that an all-out effort is needed to provide IT skills to the youth as Pakistan will require 230,000 trained IT personnel by 2010. According to the prime minister, the sector currently employs 90,000 professionals and added that the IT industry is growing at 50 per cant per year.
