Next Monday marks the fifth anniversary of September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon building in 2001.

Five years after the attack on the U.S., a group of 75 leading academics called 9/11 Scholars for Truth and led by Steven E Jones, a physics professor at a university in Utah, suggests that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated by warmongers inside the White House in an attempt to justify the U.S.-led occupation of oil-rich countries.

Professor Jones, who studied debris from the attacks, affirms that explosives were used to bring down the towers.

"We are investigating the possibility of thermite-based arson and demolition," he told The New York Times last week.

The academics’ allegations that the attacks on New York and Washington were an “inside job’ ’ stunned the American public, causing shocking outrage in the country, few days ahead of the fifth anniversary of the horrific incident which left almost 3,000 dead.

“We don’t believe that 19 hijackers and a few others in a cave in Afghanistan pulled this off acting alone. We challenge this official theory and, by god, we’re going to get to the bottom of this,’’ Professor Jones said.

According to the academics revelations, a group of U.S. neo-conservatives called the Project for a New American Century, orchestrated the 9/11 attacks to create an excuse to invade Afghanistan then Iraq.

Professor argues that it’s almost impossible for the Twin Towers to collapse the way they did from the collision of two planes.

"The planes were just a distraction," says James Fetzer, a retired professor at the University of Minnesota. "The evidence is so overwhelming, but most Americans don't have time to take a look at this."

But this is not the first time such a conspiracy theory has been put forward, numerous conspiracy theories emerged over the past years since the attacks occurred, but all were dismissed by the American media and the 9/11 Commission which has so far failed to present any creditable evidence supporting the claim that 19 Arab and Muslim hijackers carried out the deadly attacks.

Christopher Pyle, professor of constitutional law at Mount Holyoake College in Massachusetts, dismissed the academics’ theory. He said: “To plant bombs in three buildings? It’s too huge a project and would require far too many people to keep it a secret later.

“After every major crisis, we’ve had conspiracy theorists who come up with plausible scenarios for gullible people. It’s a waste of time.’’

None of the journalists concerned showed up at the seminars Jones gave last month at his Mormon university - Brigham Young, in Provo, Utah - where he presented some of his ideas.

The academics are urging the Congress to reopen investigation into the attacks, stressing that the facts their probe suggests should not be ignored.
