Ballack hopeful over injury
Michael Ballack is hopeful of brushing off his hip injury in time to feature in Chelsea's Premiership opener with Manchester City on Sunday.
The German powerhouse, a summer signing from Bayern Munich, pulled up sharply during the first half of Sunday's Community Shield and was withdrawn after treatment failed to have the desired effect.
Blues chief Jose Mourinho said on Sunday that he was in the dark over Ballack's well-being and the problem proved severe enough to rule him out of Germany's friendly with Sweden on Wednesday.
Ballack has remained in London for treatment and he is hopeful of shrugging off the complaint in time for their Premiership opener.
"The injury is a painful bruise and there is some swelling around the hip," he told the club's website.
"I have to wait and see what happens in the next few days, but I'm hoping it'll be okay for the Manchester City game on Sunday."
Chelsea have a number of fitness worries, with Michael Essien nursing a broken wrist and Joe Cole and Petr Cech also sidelined.Comment

FA uphold bans for United duo
Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes have had their Amsterdam Tournament bans upheld by The Football Association.
The Manchester United duo were both sent off in the pre-season friendly game against Porto on August 4.
While The Red Devils had hoped the decisions would be overturned on appeal, The FA have now dismissed those claims of wrongful dismissal.
Both players were withdrawn from the second game of the competition at the Amsterdam ArenA, but Rooney's dismissal for violent conduct and Scholes' red card for serious foul play now means they must serve a three-match ban.
They are now set to miss the Premiership games at Charlton Athletic on August 23, at Watford on August 26 and Tottenham Hotspur at home on September 9.Comment
