Polio program started in 1994 when there were a total of 23500 polio cases reported nationwide. The first child to be immunized was none other than Asifa Bhutto daughter of the then Prime Minister Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. Due to the polio campaigns the number of reported polio cases kept on decreasing every year and till 2007 only 32 cases were reported. However 2008 brought alarm bells to the health environment as for the first time in history it raised from 32 to 118, hence stress was laid upon accelerating and giving special attention to the effort.

Role of NADRA
  • NADRA has always been conscious of child registration however this time NADRA started thinking upon the lines of registering and vaccinating the children, thus creating awareness and importance of health nationwide.
  • NADRA had a platform which could be utilized, thus meetings took place between NADRA officials and that of Ministry of Health.
  • NADRA offered the services of its 185 Mobile Registration Vans at a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister and NADRA was represented by Secretary Interior who offered our full support and cooperation to the whole initiative.
  • At the district level all of our MRVs incharges had to coordinate with Health EDOs.
  • One member Polio team was placed in each MRV, and wherever the MRVs went two separate lines were formed one of registration and other of Polio.
  • Prior announcements were made in local mosques.
